Getting beyond skin deep

DSCN1131

I have been absent for a few weeks.  I think about blogging every day, but never get to it.   Where have I been?  I haven’t been depressed or sick or even anti-social.    It has been all about allergies at my house lately.  First the dogs, one and then the other, and now I am suffering too.  They toss and turn and so do I, itchy and uncomfortable.  We are tired of having one foot in the world of the living. A man, a dog, and an altercation

DSCN0006

I was out walking Barkley yesterday with  my friend Nancy when something happened.   We were on a street around the corner from where I live when a big German Shepherd came running out from the yard into the street and approached me.  I have to say, it scared the S*@T out of me.  The situation ended with no injuries except emotional ones.  The owner of the dog called his dog back and then verbally got stuck into me.  We had an altercation.  First I was shocked, then angry, then I got to thinking.    What did it mean? The blizzard of 2016

DSCN0364

The blizzard hit the east coast on Friday, 22 January and didn’t end until Saturday.  We were happy to be out of the DC area for this one, but we still got hit hard.  Before the snow we treated ourselves to a pizza lunch at an Italian restaurant near our local ski lodge.  Then it was home to wait.  In the afternoon it began. First snow of winter 2016

DSCN0260

The pond frozen over with a dusting of fresh snow.

A few days ago we had our first snow.  It started with a blustery wind and chunks of snow that blew around the yard.  About half an hour later it was over.  The few flakes had already melted as the temperature rose to the high 30s.  We went to the gym, we fed the dogs, and I settled down at the table with my computer, answering and writing emails.    I had sent a number of emails to friends the day but some of them had not arrived . . . gremlins at work, so I was trying to reconstruct them. When the lights go out

IMG_1982

Today we returned from a week of vacation.  We were visiting family in Florida for an extended Thanksgiving holiday so I haven’t been blogging.  This will be a short blog so you know I haven’t completely dropped off the face of the earth.  I’ll get back to a more regular schedule once I get unpacked and catch up with email and phone messages.  I don’t know about you, but when I am away from home for more than two or three days, it takes me some time to get back to my routine.  Things pile up, and yet life has to go on.   Continue reading

Adventures in the woods: A Friday the 13th Story

IMG_3436As you know my days have been taken up caring for Shiloh and helping him recuperate.  Friday the 13th was the first day he slept through the night.  It’s been a long time since I had babies waking me up, so I’m pretty devoted to the good night’s sleep.  For him, though, I’m willing to get up multiple times as he shifts around to get comfortable.  The day ahead seems promising with so auspicious a beginning.  Boy, was I wrong  .  .  .  Continue reading

A good knee is hard to find

IMG_1545

Shiloh doing one of his favorite things . . . swimming.

I’m writing this late in the evening.  Barkley and Shiloh are fast asleep, Barkley on his bed, and Shiloh on mine.  We have had Shiloh for six years now, and every night we tell him to go to his bed, and every night he looks at us and goes back to sleep, and we have to either nudge him off the bed or carry him off.  There are a lot of days in six years, and Continue reading
